01 — Position

Grown, not extracted.

Plastic foam begins in fossil carbon. A Grybas material begins in a living network. We grow mycelium through agricultural residues until it becomes packaging, interior surfaces, and objects that are designed to return to the soil.

03 — Process

Four quiet stages.

01

Residue

Agricultural by-products become the feedstock.

02

Network

Mycelium binds that feedstock as it grows.

03

Form

Growth is guided into a useful shape.

04

Rest

The material is dried and finished. Growth stops.

04 — Questions

Before the sample.

What does Grybas do?

We grow ecological materials from mushroom mycelium. The work is for brands, architects, and designers who need an alternative to plastic foam and other extracted sheet goods.

What is mycelium?

Mycelium is the thread-like body of a fungus. Grown through agricultural residues, those threads hold the loose material together and become a solid form.

Where is Grybas based?

Costa Rica. The name Grybas is the Lithuanian word for mushroom. The studio works in ecological design and the circular economy.
